Dear current and prospective parents and children:

At NVMS, we take responsibility for the safety of our children seriously.  As a result of under-immunization, there have been outbreaks nationwide and worldwide of measles, mumps and whooping cough (pertussis).These outbreaks have resulted in unnecessary and preventable deaths.  There have been recent outbreaks of whooping cough in Roanoke and surrounding areas.  Whooping cough sounds benign, but it can be deadly.  It is most dangerous to young children and to those with underlying health problems.  With this information in mind, the NVMS Board has voted unanimously to require that all students be vaccinated as of the start of the 2012-2013 school year.  NVMS is keeping in line with the recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).  If you have any questions or concerns about this new policy, please refer to the information located in the NVMS office, which includes statements from the CDC, as well as the “Physicians to Children Vaccine Policy.”  You can also go to immunize.org and click under the heading “for the public.”  Elizabeth Martin, MD, is one of our board members, and two of her three children attend NVMS.  She is happy to address any questions that parents may have related to this matter.  She can be contacted at emartin@ptow.com
